MANCHESTER: Manchester United have rejected Barcelona’s offer to sign captain Harry Maguire in talks involving Frenkie de Jong.
Barcelona are reportedly trying to sign Maguire in exchange for De Jong, but new United manager Erik ten Hag wants to keep the England center -back.
De Jong is seen as Ten Hag’s main target in the transfer window this time around, a player who was once with him when at Ajax.
United’s midfield needs to be completely overhauled and De Jong is said to be able to make a big impact in ensuring the team can move as a unit.
Ten Hag needs to get back to strengthening his team after Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard are no longer with United next season.
Barcelona manager Xavi is looking for a new center -back after Gerard Pique was often sidelined with injuries and Samuel Umtiti is set to leave Camp Nou.
They can call up Ronald Araujo, Eric Garcia and Clement Lenglet but Maguire’s ‘aggressive’ style of play is seen as in line with Barcelona’s football philosophy.
However, his style of play last season only invited criticism from fans where United went through an embarrassing campaign to just be in sixth place in the English Premier League.
The 29 -year -old center -back has played for Sheffield United and Hull City, and became the world’s most expensive defender when he moved from Leicester to United in 2019.
He made 144 appearances for United but has yet to win any championships, and his performances on the pitch have often drawn criticism from fans.
However he is seen to be more consistent on the international stage throughout his 46 appearances and still earns the trust of England manager Gareth Southgate.
