MADRID: Villarreal have announced that former Arsenal and Sevilla boss Unai Emery will take over as La Liga coach after the dismissal of Javi Calleja.
The 48-year-old Emery was sacked by Arsenal last November after the Gunners went seven games without a win, their worst performance since 1992.
He led Sevilla by winning three consecutive Europa League titles from 2014 to 2016 before winning five major trophies with French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
“Villarreal CF has reached an agreement with Unai Emery as head coach for the next three seasons,” Villarreal said in a statement.
Villarreal parted ways with Calleja, who is also their former player this week, despite bringing the club to fifth place in La Liga.
Emery made it to the Europa League final last season with Arsenal, but lost to rivals Chelsea.
