MADRID: Atletico Madrid extended their lead on the La Liga stage today after Luis Suarez scored in a 1-0 win over Getafe while Real Madrid only drew 1-1 at Elche.
Suarez found the goal in the 20th minute through a powerful header from a Yannick Carrasco cross that gave Diego Simeone’s side 35 points, two in front of Madrid’s main challenger after they drew a Fidel Chaves penalty after Luka Modric’s opening goal.
Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Villarreal are all seven points behind while Barcelona are 10 points behind Atletico in seventh place after a 1-1 draw against Eibar yesterday.
Atletico also played less than two games against defending champions Madrid when they won Simeone’s 500th meeting as the club’s coach.
“When I took a flight to get here, I thought when I left the club (as a player), I always wanted to come back,” said Simeone, who has been guiding Atletico for 10 years.
“I met the player (Koke, Saul Niguez) who wanted to take the club out of a difficult moment, and I have a relationship with them beyond football.”
Uruguay striker’s eighth goal, Suarez this season, was enough for Atletico who failed to stand out despite dropping the strongest line-up at Wanda Metropolitano.
