MADRID: Spain and Portugal both lacked a destructive touch when tied 0-0 in a friendly ahead of the European Championships in Metropolitano near Madrid this morning.
The match was to mark the two countries launching their bidding for the 2030 World Cup and for the hosts to test their new defenses.
Cristiano Ronaldo had a disappointing night in his first game in Madrid since leaving Real in 2018 and twice nearly blasted home a goal in addition to creating chances for Diogo Jota who failed to perfect it.
With the support of Joao Felix, Ronaldo is tightly controlled by Sergio Busquets and Thiago Alcantara in midfield.
“It was a very good test for us and I think we are ready for the European Championships,” Spain coach Luis Enrique said.
“In the first 60 minutes we almost managed to hold off the European champions, they could barely make three passes in a row,” he said.
Alvaro Morata almost scored for Spain but missed two chances and an attempt to hit the crossbar at the end of the match.
“I think we had enough chances to score,” Enrique said.
“I’m not angry when my players miss an opportunity. I’m not going to face my players for failing to take a chance.”
