LONDON: One of Diego Maradona’s sons has asked Lionel Messi to stop using the No. 10 jersey with Argentina and Barcelona in honor of his father.
Maradona, who died at the age of 60 last week, became famous after winning the World Cup for his country in 1986 with him being labeled the best player in the world.
Messi now has to fulfill Maradona’s responsibilities with the national team – though he has yet to create similar success while wearing the blue and white jersey.
Maradona also won the Copa Del Rey with Barca wearing a No10 jersey even though it was far less than Messi’s 34 trophies with the club.
And the legendary son, also named Diego, believes his father’s former club should no longer use the jersey as a reminder.
As Marca reported, he said: “In the team he played, including Barça. I have no doubt.”
Maradona started his career with the Argentinos Juniors before playing for Boca Juniors, Barca, Napoli, Sevilla and Newell’s Old Boys.
Messi paid tribute to Maradona by revealing Newell’s Old Boys shirt after scoring in a 4-0 win over Osasuna last week.
