LIVERPOOL: Darwin Nunez is determined to carve his name in Liverpool history when he confirmed a move from Benfica today for a fee could hit a club record 100 million euros.
The Champions League finalist paid 75 million euros to get the 22-year-old while an additional 25 million based on performances in addition to some payments requested by Benfica.
It could lead to Nunez’s transfer of more than £ 75 million paid by Liverpool to Virgil Van Dijk in January 2018 making him the fifth most expensive player in Premier League history.
The Uruguayan scored 34 goals in 41 appearances last season, including two against Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
“I’m very happy to be here in Liverpool. It’s a very big club,” Nunez told Liverpool’s website.
“When I arrived at the training center, I was very surprised to see the planning and structure as well as all the trophies that are here.
“You can imagine yourself winning more trophies and then when you come back here and see the trophies on display, you can say,‘ Look at that, I was part of it, I was there back then, winning the trophy ’.
“That’s why I came here, to Liverpool – to win trophies and titles.”
The presence of the player adds to Jurgen Klopp’s efforts to improve Liverpool’s quality on the attacking side.
