MADRID: Ronald Koeman defended his tactical game after being accused of betraying Barcelona’s attacking tradition during a 1-1 draw at home to Granada.
Koeman included Gerard Pique midway through the game to pair with Luuk de Jong, while Ronald Araujo, another central defender, was also placed in the attacking line in Barca’s bid to find the equalizer.
Araujo finally headed in an equalizer in injury time after Domingos Duarte put Granada ahead early in the game.
“We changed our pattern a little bit. The space is open on the sides, not in the middle.
“We used Pique, De Jong and Araujo, and one of their cross passes produced a draw,” Koeman said.
Koeman’s position began to falter after a 3-0 defeat at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
After the draw with Granada, fans were even more disappointed when they saw the pattern of Barcelona’s game applied by Koeman.
“If you look at the list of players, what are you going to do? Play tiki-taka? Tiki-taka when there’s no space?
“We did what was necessary. We tried to win the other way. I won’t say anything more because everything is questionable,” he said.
