5 Main Candidates To Replace Solskjaer

MANCHESTER: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure as Manchester United manager came to an end today when the Norwegian was sacked following an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at Watford.

Solskjaer failed to win a trophy in almost three years as manager at Old Trafford and signs of significant improvement can be seen after finishing second in the English Premier League (EPL) last season, yet it was hampered by five defeats in their last seven league games this season.

United are 12 points behind the top of the league and the club have announced their intention to appoint a temporary manager until the end of the season before appointing a permanent coach.

AFP Sport sees five of the top candidates to replace Solskjaer:

Zinedine Zidane – Three of the Champions League titles were won by Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane while under Zidane at Real Madrid and the Frenchman is also now a free agent after finishing his second stint with the Spanish giants in May. Zidane proved himself an expert in forming a star -lined squad in the team in Madrid where he also won two La Liga titles. That’s what United needs and its global profile is in line with the brand -building training the British giant has been doing over the past few years.

Brendan Rodgers – The best option in the domestic market for United is Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers proved himself capable of handling the claim of winning every week in three years at Celtic, where he swept seven domestic trophies before returning to the EPL with Leicester. However, Leicester have also struggled in recent times with just two wins in their last nine league games.

Erik ten Hag – The Dutchman is in charge of one of the best teams in Europe at the moment with Ajax already in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Ten Hag has been linked with a number of top positions after leading the four-time European champions to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 1997 two years ago. The former Bayern Munich youth coach seems to fit the attacking style demanded of the United manager.

Luis Enrique – This coach from Spain is one of the most experienced among the list of talented individuals. He won a treble in his first season at Barcelona and added another La Liga title with three strikers Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. Fluent in English, Luis Enrique has never hidden his desire to one day become a coach in the EPL. His success with Spain this year at Euro 2020 and advancing to the League of Nations final shows he is also capable of producing an interesting team without the same stellar qualities, as he did at Camp Nou.

Mauricio Pochettino – The Argentine is an individual missed by United as the Red Devils maintained faith in Solskjaer when Pochettino became a free agent for more than a year after being sacked by Tottenham in 2019. Now leading Paris Saint -Germain (PSG), Pochettino is unlikely to move on mid-season with his side leading by 12 points at the top of Ligue 1 and another chance to win the club’s first Champions League. However, Pochettino’s job in the French capital has not been very smooth, especially in his dealings with PSG sporting director Leonardo. Waiting until the end of the season to appoint a permanent coach, United opened up another opportunity to lure Pochettino to Old Trafford.
